With the influx of concerns regarding toxic materials in childrens' toys, worries naturally extend to the safety of toys for pets. In the absence of more stringent regulations, pet owners searching for non-toxic play-things are left with blind hope purchases. But why worry if a purchase will harm pets when pet toys are simple and easy to make? This article describes how to make inexpensive and non-toxic play-things any pet rabbit will love.

A Hay Rack Alternative

Hay racks are a handy way to provide the pet rabbit with unlimited amounts of hay. They are also a good way to keep the cage clean. However, many hay racks are made of plastic and can be quite expensive.

Crafty alternatives to a hay rack include:

  • Create a “Hay Roll”: Using a toilet paper roll or a paper towel roll, take a pair of scissors and cut a “U-shape” in the center of the roll. The “U” should span one-third the width of the roll. Pull up the “U” and bend it back so that it becomes a flap. Fill the roll with hay and place in the cage. The hay roll serves a dual purpose as a hay dispenser and a play-thing for the bunny.
  • Make a Cardboard Hay Bowl: Similar to a trough, construct a cardboard box that fits the width of the rabbit cage. Make sure it is deep enough so that the hay does not spill onto the cage floor when the rabbit eats the hay.
  • Construct a Cardboard Hay Dispenser: Use a small rectangular cardboard box. It should have an open top and its length should match the width of the rabbit cage. Take one of the longer sides of the box and cut a rectangle on the lower half. This will be where the hay is dispensed. On the same side, cut two small slits in the top two corners of the box. Turn this side to face the rabbit cage. Use some hemp or natural non-toxic yarn to tie the box to the rabbit cage. Fill the box with hay.

Green and Yummy Things to Munch and Toss

Bunnies love to nibble and move things around. Instead of plastic balls or other commercial toys, try:
